Witch Hazel extract is a herbal extract taken from the leaves and bark of the Witch Hazel plant and has been around for centuries.
Though seldom seen in your over the counter skin care products, the extract from the Witch Hazel plant has remarkable skin care components that have shown very impressive results from researchers who have conducted studies in countries around the world. Witch Hazel Extract has been shown to have anti-inflammatory effects upon the skin from rashes to insect bites and has been demonstrated to soothe allergic reactions upon the skin such as poison ivy. Recently, I sprained my ankle and because Witch Hazel is also an astringent, which helps reduce swelling, I put some of my Lanolin Cream on my ankle that was grossly swollen from the sprain and the swelling was completely gone within 48 hours with the accompanying pain relieved, so much so that I could now put weight on the foot.
Acting as a skin sanitizer, probably one of Witch Hazel’s most impressive qualities is its antibacterial effect it has against viruses and other infection causing bacteria on the skin, according to a study done by researchers in Germany in 2002, making Witch Hazel an ideal choice for relieving viral skin infections such as chicken pox and some kinds of dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema.
Another study done in Germany found that Witch Hazel is an effective skin moisturizer and helps soften the skin by reducing water loss from the skin. Witch Hazel also is known for being an astringent, which helps tighten the skin proteins, and Witch Hazel can even be used on the skin to soothe sunburn and halt peeling of the skin from sunburn. There are so many good effects brought about by the use of natural organic Witch Hazel extract, that I naturally include it in my Lanolin Hand Cream shown above.
