People all the time ask me why organic skin care products are better for your skin than what I call “over the counter, mass manufactured, petrochemical and synthetic products” are.
Recently I read an article in a very well know news media op ed, which in essence, made the claim that as long as a person changed their diet to more fresh fruits and vegetables, and eliminated the processed and fast foods, the food did not necessarily have to be organic to have the same nutritious health effects upon one’s body. I can’t go along with this opinion because as the old adage says “you are what you eat”. The same is true concerning what you put on your skin because what you put on your skin ultimately ends up in your body.
Under the United States Department of Agriculture, the definition of organic means that the produce is generally free from synthetic chemicals, antibiotics and hormones and has not been irradiated or fertilized with sewage and was grown without the use of pesticides and contains no genetically modified ingredients. This means that organic or certified organic products such as I use in all of ToniOrganics handcrafted skin care products insofar as possible are grown with ingredients and raw materials that are free of synthetic chemicals and pesticides and GMO, or genetically modified organisms, nor do they have any petroleum toxic waxes or artificial chemicals. My organic products, insofar as possible, are natural to one’s body where as synthetic and artificial chemicals are not.
Skin care products are very similar to the food we eat. The shelves at the grocery store, including non-organic fresh fruits and vegetables, are packed full of goods and produce that include synthetic chemicals and toxic pesticides and all of the above that are unnatural and harmful for one’s body whereas a nutritious meal is one that does not include fake or unnatural synthetic chemicals or toxic artificial anything in it.
Organic skin care products, simply put, are so much better for you skin because a massive amount of non-organic skin care products you purchase today over-the-counter, while they may have on the label “all natural” were grown or produced and manufactured using toxic disease causing chemicals, preservatives, pesticides and so forth that eventually end up in your body via skin cell absorption. Think about the short term and long term consequences of putting a toxic chemical in your body before you purchase it. As with any mass manufactured production, “cutting corners” by using cheap, fake materials in production, from the cars we drive to the clothes we wear to the skin care creams we put on our bodies, you will always have adverse consequences.
One more thing you need to know. Many of the so-called finer and even top of the line over the counter body care creams and lotions are laced with and include toxic chemicals. That is why it is so important to check all of the ingredients on the label and to be aware of which chemicals and preservatives are indeed harmful to your body. (I will be writing more about those harmful chemicals in another entry). You can be sure that if a body care cream sits on a store shelf month after month, it contains an artificial chemical, preservative and fragrances. Who would want to put that on their skin is beyond my way of thinking. Many companies will simply inscribe “fragrance” on the label. You have no way of knowing “what fragrance”, so put it back on the shelf. An authentic organic fragrance will specify on the label that it is indeed an organic-certified organic essential oil with its name. What you don’t know can hurt you! It just makes good sense not use synthetic or artificial products on your precious skin when for a dollar or two more you can purchase the real thing and have peace of mind knowing you are not putting a toxic substance on your skin by purchasing organic skin care products.
